Tommy Davidson Continues to “Spread Happy”
From In Living Color, Booty Call, Juwanna Mann, Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls, and countless other iconic films and television shows, Tommy Davidson has cemented himself as one of comedy’s most recognizable entertainers.
Returning to familiar territory, Tommy stopped in Raleigh for a sold-out weekend at Goodnights Comedy Club. Reflecting on his journey, he shared that one of his very first comedy performances was in nearby Durham. Decades later, he continues to tour because he genuinely loves what he does and wants to, in his words, “spread happy.”
Speaking of spreading happiness, Tommy is preparing for one of his most exciting projects yet—a spin-off centered around his beloved character, Varnell Hill, from the hit sitcom Martin. Fans will remember Varnell as the over-the-top television personality who famously crossed paths with Martin Payne.
What makes this project even more exciting is that it won’t simply recreate the original. Tommy explained that the series will feature appearances from familiar Martin cast members, Damon Wayans, and other special guests while giving audiences a fresh take on the character.
As Tommy described it:
“A TV show about a late-night talk show that’s a real late-night talk show.”
The concept perfectly reflects Tommy’s fearless creativity. When I asked whether the show would tackle today’s conversations surrounding late-night television, freedom of speech, and the changing media landscape, he didn’t hesitate. He made it clear that he’s willing to explore topics many people avoid, using comedy as both entertainment and conversation.
Alongside bringing Varnell Hill back to life, Tommy may also be returning to music. Many people don’t realize that his career extends beyond acting and comedy. Having collaborated with legendary artists like Earth, Wind & Fire, he’s looking forward to embracing every chapter of his creativity simultaneously—music, television, comedy, and entrepreneurship.
After more than four decades in entertainment, Tommy says he’s proudest of the person he’s become.
While audiences recognize him as a comedian and movie star, he believes the greatest growth has happened offstage. Returning to comedy with a renewed sense of balance has allowed him to appreciate success differently, and it’s that perspective that has kept him evolving throughout his career.

After helping raise multiple generations as the unforgettable voice of Oscar Proud, Tommy understands the impact animation can have on young audiences. One of the most inspiring stories he shared involved the original cast advocating for fair treatment during production of The Proud Family Movie. Rather than allowing the project to fall apart, Tommy encouraged everyone to remember what the show represented.
To him, The Proud Family was bigger than a paycheck. It was one of the few animated series on Disney Channel centered around a Black family, giving countless children the opportunity to see themselves represented on screen. That commitment helped preserve a legacy that continues today through The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder, introducing the beloved characters to an entirely new generation while honoring the original cast.
